Citizenship for children born in Australia to New Zealand Stream 189 visa applicants.

09 January 2023

Minister for Citizenship and Immigration Andrew Giles MP amended the regulations for the Citizenship Act 2007 in December 2022. Due to extraordinary wait-times to process the New Zealand Stream 189 visa, applicants granted PR after 31 December 2021 up to 1 July 2023, will be taken to have been granted PR on 1 January 2022.

What does this mean for visa applicants?

NZ 189 visa applicants will be eligible to apply for Australian citizenship from 1 January 2023, subject to meeting the usual health and character criteria in the Citizenship Act. You do not have wait for 12 months.
