The two-party preferred voting for Higgins in the 2016 election was a contest between the standing Federal Member Kelly O’Dwyer (LNP), and Jason Ball for the Australian Greens. With Kelly O’Dwyer not contesting the 2019 election the Greens Jason Ball is hoping to capitalise on the changing demographic within the electorate to win Higgins.

Jason has a strong background in human rights and equality and backs the Australian Greens support for a pathway to citizenship for New Zealanders in Australia.

Jason Ball is the Greens candidate for Higgins.

Jason stood for the first time in 2016, achieving an 8.5% swing against sitting member Kelly O’Dwyer. She has since retired, making the seat – which the Liberals have held since 1946 – the most exciting Greens/Liberal contest in the country.

Jason has championed equality and inclusion since coming out in 2012 as the first openly gay Aussie Rules player. He was a leading figure in the marriage equality campaign and is the co-founder of Pride Cup, a social enterprise that helps football clubs stage matches to celebrate LGBTI players, supporters and officials.

A proud supporter of a vibrant multicultural society, he regularly volunteers his time for projects like Rotary Prahran’s Homework Club, mentoring primary school children from refugee backgrounds.

Jason was named 2017 Young Australian of the Year for Victoria, was honoured by the University of Melbourne with the Arts Alumni Rising Star Award in 2016 and is an ambassador for mental health network beyondblue.

Statement from Jason Ball

“The Greens are committed to an inclusive, non-discriminatory immigration program that encourages everyone who moves here to participate fully in Australian society. New Zealanders who are living and working in Higgins are entitled to the benefits of being part of that community.”

“If elected I will work with my Greens colleagues to replace the unfair Special Category Visa, created by the Liberals in the John Howard era, with a permanent residence visa available to all NZ citizens on arrival that offers the same entitlements as other permanent residency visas, including the opportunity to apply for Australian citizenship.”
