Citizenship Bill struck down by Senate

18 October 2017

The Government’s Citizenship Amendment Bill (2017) was formally discharged from the Senate Order of Business/Notice Paper at 7.22 pm AEST today.

Oz Kiwi can now confirm that current citizenship law applies.

A big thanks to all who opposed the Bill, including:

  • the Australian Greens, especially Senator Nick McKim who introduced the Motion to strike down the Bill;
  • Labor, especially Tony Burke MP for his advocacy work and Senator Malarndirri McCarthy who seconded the Motion; and
  • the Nick Xenophon Team.

Thanks also to all the organisations and their supporters, especially Oz Kiwis, who wrote and spoke out against the Bill. This result is very much a collective effort.
