The High Court of Australia handed down its decision this afternoon in relation to the government’s dual citizenship cases.

Barnaby Joyce MP, and Senators Ludlum, Nash, Roberts and Waters were found to be dual citizens and therefore in contravention of Section 44 of the Australian Constitution. The vacant Senate seats will be filled by a special count of ballot papers from the 2016 election.

Senators Canavan and Xenophon were cleared and can remain in the Senate.

The LNP Government hold a one seat majority in the House of Representatives. Having renounced his New Zealand citizenship by descent Barnaby Joyce must now recontest his seat in electorate of New England, NSW.
