Citizenship Amendment Bill debate

Proposed citizenship changes

Update

18 October 2017

The proposed citizenship changes will not be implemented after the Citizenship Amendment Bill was struck down by the Senate today. Oz Kiwi can now confirm that current citizenship law applies.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill (2017) is being debated in the House of Representatives this week. Read the speeches from the debate in the Parliamentary Hansard:

  • Wednesday 9 August, from page 11; and
  • Thursday 10 August, from page 18.

The Senate Legal and Constitutional Affairs Committee are conducting an inquiry into the Citizenship Amendment Bill with a report due on 4 September 2017.

Recommendations from the report will be considered before it’s voted on and then tabled in the Senate.

The earliest the Senate can either block or pass it is late September, or sometime in October 2017. In our view it’s more likely to be November 2017 given the process, or longer if the Minister wishes to drag it out.
