Brownlee blindsided by Aussie uni fees changes

If you were already annoyed about Brownlee’s performance this morning, just wait until you hear him blaming Kiwis who’ll be affected by the tertiary education cuts for not becoming Australian citizens!

It seems Brownlee went into his meetings today without really understanding, or even sympathising with, Kiwis in Australia or the issues they face.

The Foreign Minister says New Zealand was blindsided by an Australian proposal to boost fees for Kiwis studying across the ditch.

Gerry Brownlee met with his Australian counterpart Julie Bishop today and says he raised his concerns over the issue.

Under proposed changes in Australia, Kiwis would no longer be entitled to subsidised tertiary study from next year.

Browlee told Larry Williams says Bishop acknowledged the announcement could have been delivered better.

“Julie Bishop accepted that because we’re good friends, we are close, we perhaps should have got a sooner heads up,” Brownlee said.
