Australian Labor Party supports permanent residency for Kiwis

A fair go for all

While Oz Kiwi is not politically aligned to any party, we are strongly encouraged by the position held by the Australian Labor Party with regards to their 2015 National platform.

Chapter 9: A fair go for all, section 282 states:

“Labor believes that there is an inequity for New Zealand citizens living in Australia under the terms of the Trans-Tasman Travel Arrangements (TTTA). Labor believes that there should be consideration given to the permanent residency status and potential citizenship arrangements for New Zealand citizens living in Australia under the terms of the TTTA.”

Those Kiwis who can vote should – not only it is mandatory to vote in Australia – but many New Zealanders are denied the right to vote given they have no pathway to citizenship. There are some exceptions for those in Australia on or before the electoral law changes in the mid 1980’s.
